A scientific study was conducted after the 1914-1918 World War I to find out whether there exist a Power beyond the power or capacities of human beings. The study was concluded in the 1980s with the findings that whatever one does to another sooner or later has unintended equal and corresponding effects to the doer. Christians call it God's Justice because the action is reflected back to whom/where it is coming from. Others call it backfire, boomerang, karma, etc.
Unfortunately, that scientific findings were not well-disseminated for unknown reason/s. That truth about the law of nature did not reach large mass of people who otherwise would have benefited from that information. Ignoring or ignorance of the law of nature has its fatal consequences such as the repetition of the world war in the 1940s.
Our faith teaches us that when we do good to others we also do it to ourselves; that when we hurt others we also hurt ourselves. In science and medicine, we learn that there is balance of the pair of opposing forces in us when we are in the state of well-being or wholeness. Our Christian faith calls it the presence of God or Angel because of the presence of the thoughts and feelings of health, well-being, wholeness or equanimity.
Science/medicine also teaches us that when there is imbalance of the chemical elements that constitute our being, there is imbalance in the pair of opposing forces within us and we are prone to hurt others and/or hurt ourselves. Science is teaching us that the pair of opposing forces that exist in each one of us naturally are good and they need and help each others to make us healthy physically, emotionally and intellectually; that the pair of opposing forces in nature and within and outside of us are complementary and thoughts and feelings of well-being and wholeness, control of ourselves and the situations are present when the pair of opposing forces are balance. It is not proper therefore to call/label the positive force as the angel, and the negative force as the devil. Only when there is balance in the pair of opposing forces can we experience God/Goodness/Angel/equanimity or well-being. Only when there is imbalance or excesses in any of the pair of opposing forces in nature can we experience Lucifer/Satan/devil, the tendency or inclination to harm others and/or ourselves.
The Bible teaches us that we, each one of us are allowed or have the capabilities of doing anything due to the presence in us of what psychology calls the faculty of the mind which is free will, but the Bible also teaches us there is exception to what we are allowed to do because of the moral law. As what the findings of the scientific study after World War I has found out, the law of nature did not give us absolute control or capabilities to do all that we want to do, or else we are going to be adversely affected if we don't cooperate with the law of nature. We are given restrictions because all human beings have inadequacy. No one is perfect. No man is an island as one saying goes. We can't satisfy our needs by our own efforts or energies alone. We need other human beings and their resources, such as time, energy, wealth, knowledge, skills, etc.; and others need us too. We are governed by the law of nature. If we can't recognize or accept that each one of us has limitations, that we are not allowed to use others and their resources without their consent to achieve our wishes or to fulfill our needs and wants, we violate/defy the law of nature. And so the other force which is an opposing force existing all the time will push back the force to whom/where it is coming from. We punish ourselves sooner or later.
